Patch Flora – designs and kits

Marilyn Hornby background

My father showed me how to use a sewing machine when I was ten and I started making my own clothes in my teens. In the intervening years I became interested in knitting, sewing, bobbin lace and crochet and in the early 1990s I attended classes on patchwork. This led to me entering a quilt in an exhibition in Harrogate. The interest in the 3-D fuchsia blocks that made up the quilt gave me the idea of fuchsia kits for people to make up themselves. This was in 1994 while I was still a science teacher at a secondary school. In the evenings I taught Hardanger embroidery to Adult Education classes and from this it became clear that there was also a demand for Hardanger kits of my own design.

Patch Flora

In 1996 I ceased to be a school teacher and began trading as Patch Flora in Luton, Bedfordshire, with, of course, the fuchsia for my logo. My first task was to expand the range of my applique designs and Hardanger kits for sale and to get articles published in needlework magazines. I soon became a regular trader at needlework shows, about eight a year, at venues from Exeter to Edinburgh. After discerning a need for reliable tuition I started a programme of classes and workshops at home that has run ever since. To sustain these activities it became necessary to have for sale appropriate fabrics, threads and equipment and to develop a website for mail order business and publicity. My range has expanded over the years to include mobiles, floral motifs, butterflies, angels, trapunto, redwork and fused work. In 2007, I and Patch Flora moved to Barnstaple, Devon.

Trading under the name Patch Flora, I sell my own designs and kits that will introduce you to different types and techniques of needlework and related crafts, including patchwork, various quilting methods, applique, 3D applique, Redwork (hand), Hardanger embroidery (hand) and free machine embroidery combined with fused work. Items to make include bed quilts, lap quilts, cushions, bags, decorations, mats, table cloths and wall hangings.

All designs you will see on this site are unique Patch Flora designs!
